Garduaction is a local community project at the beautiful South Coast of Java. This area faces various ecological and social problems due to waste and the project aims at establishing community based waste management strategies and practices. The core of Garduaction is a waste bank in which habitants of the surrounding village as well as waste pickers can deposit their sorted waste instead of burning it or throwing it into rivers. Waste banks operate like conventional banks with the only exception that people do not safe money, but the economic, monetary value of waste. This concept is slowly establishing in the village and there is still much support needed to actually keep in running. Next to this waste bank Garduaction also includes an education project for children and Gardugreen, a small area of organic farming. It is a very creative space, many handicrafts and artistic installations are made out of waste. You are welcome to get involved in any aspect of the project you would like to and Garduaction is open for any new ideas
Garduaction has really good vibes with many local volunteers, barbecues and music in the evening. For some donation you can sleep in the hut built out of reused materials and bamboo (you can see it in the video below). It is very simple but has amazing views to the Indian Ocean and during the night you can even listen to the waves. There are also many food stalls offering delicious local food and whenever you need something cold to drink, Ibu Tini will prepare a fresh Maracuja juice for you. Besides, you can have wonderful trips along the beautiful South Coast with its stunning cliffs and beaches and also the vibrant student city Jogjakarta is not far away. Garduaction offers you a unique chance to live with the local people and share ideas how to actively tackle waste problems together.
The project is located in the village Parangkusumo next to Parangtritis. This is a rural area at the South Coast of Java in the district Bantul of Jogjakarta Special Region. Starting from Jogjakarta it is a 30 km, around one hour drive to the South Coast. While heading south from Jogjakarta one is quickly leaving the busy atmosphere of the city. The landscape is changing and the closer one gets to the Coast, the greener it becomes – rice paddies, banana trees and all kinds of other plants are shining green all along the way.Good to know:- The waves of the Indian Ocean are very strong here. You are not allowed to swim, but if you take a trip to Gunung Kidul, which is very close by, you will find beautiful beaches where you can swim.- There is quite a lot of prostitution in this area. If you don’t feel comfortable make sure you don’t come alone, but sleep in the hut with another friend. We want to mention this here but we never had any bad experiences.
